Asemic Scroll
2021 | Mont Blanc ink on Fabriano paper | 9m x 1.5m
Being in the confines of her home during lockdown – Simone had a longing to travel and immerse myself in the different cultures of our world. She lamented over the universal struggle; affecting people of all nationalities, no matter the language spoken.… and became drawn to the study of semiotics.
Stuck in a space, not conducive to oil paint splatters and turps spills; Simone switched out her pallet knife and paint, for ink and a fine brush… embarking on the journey of The Asemic Solitary Scroll.
She studied strokes, slant, curves, proportion, angles, spacing, pressure and shapes in various written texts.
This observation, along with countless hours spent in prayer and reflection, metamorphosed into a 9m by 1.5m scroll… bursting with suggestive symbolism. Simultaneously rich in, and devoid of, meaning.
